Maserati and Lamborghini issue recalls after fire risk identified

If you travel anywhere in Miami Beach, chances are you've seen a luxury sportscar flying down the freeway or driving around town. While most people associate a high-end price tag with wealth, there's no denying that a higher cost can also mean something else: higher quality.

Unfortunately, this myth was broken earlier this year when two Italian automakers, Maserati and Lamborghini, issued recall notices for thousands of luxury spotscars. Even though thousands of vehicles were recalled because of two different defects, the cause for concern was the same: these defects could cause the vehicle to catch fire.

Maserati's recall

In a February article, United Press International called attention to Maserati's recall, which included some 40,000 Levante, Quattroporte and Ghibli vehicles model year 2014 through 2017. The automaker identified a design defect in the "seat wiring harness layout," the article explains, which could cause a fire if the wiring were to short circuit.

Lamborghini's recall

Later that month, UPI published another article notifying readers of a recall issued by Lamborghini. This recall included some 5,900 vehicles, including the $4 million Veneno Roadster, after an issue with the cars' evaporative emissions control system was identified. As the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration explains, the design defect could cause gasoline vapors to come in contact with the exhaust system, which could lead to vehicle fires.

A risk of fires, a risk of accidents

Though we may equate a higher cost with a higher quality product, these two recalls show this isn't always true. High-end automakers are not infallible, but they are responsible for warning the public about a potential danger and taking steps to correct the problem. When this duty of care is ignored, accidents happen, injuries are suffered and lives are lost. Whether a car is a few thousand dollars or a few million, this truth remains the same.
