The bed of a pickup is not the place to be in an auto accident

Having a pickup truck allows Florida residents who own them to transport large amounts of goods from one place to another. One thing that should not be transported in the bed of a pickup is people. In the event of an auto accident, those in the rear of the truck will more than likely be thrown out of it and seriously or fatally injured.

Sheer luck may have kept anyone from dying in a recent single-vehicle accident involving a pickup truck. Ten people were in the back of it and five others (including the driver) were in the cab. Preliminary reports of the crash indicate that the pickup was traveling down Interstate 75. As he sped north in the inside lane, a large, white truck moved from the right lane in front of the pickup.

In an effort to avoid hitting the other vehicle, the pickup driver veered left into the median and attempted to slow down. The driver then moved back onto the highway and then back into the median where it rolled. The 10 people in the bed of the truck were all thrown out. The 44-year-old driver suffered critical injuries, six others suffered serious injuries and the remaining passengers suffered unknown injuries. The Florida Highway Patrol reports that the investigation is ongoing.

The injured passengers retain the right to file personal injury claims against the driver even if he does not face criminal charges in connection with this auto accident. If the evidence establishes that the negligence of the pickup driver and/or the other truck driver caused the injuries suffered by the victims, the court may consider awarding them damages. Any restitution received could help with the financial losses that accompany motor vehicle accidents.
