Car accident claims 1 life, leads to injuries and a DUI arrest

A woman sadly lost her life in a tragic motor vehicle wreck in Florida. Meanwhile, her daughter suffered injuries in the collision. Another woman who is believed to have caused the car accident due to driving drunk was arrested following the collision.

According to authorities, the 44-year-old woman who ended up being arrested was driving her car and allegedly struck the back of another car. Police said the second car was then sandwiched between the first car and a semi-truck. The 18-year-old driver of the second car suffered minor injuries in the collision, but her 60-year-old mother, who was riding with her, suffered serious injuries and passed away days later.

The driver of the semi-truck did not suffer injuries in the crash. At the time of the collision, the woman driving the first car allegedly had a blood alcohol level of .172 -- over double the legal limit. She was initially arrested for DUI but might end up facing a charge of DUI manslaughter since one of the accident victims died. She could be seen smiling in her police mugshot following her arrest.

The surviving loved ones of the woman who died in the car accident may choose to file a wrongful death claim against the woman believed to have caused the accident. If the allegedly at-fault woman ends up being convicted of DUI manslaughter, proof of the conviction may be presented in a related civil court proceeding in an effort to establish liability. Only if liability is established will a judge determine claims for damages. A damage award in a successfully fought case may help with addressing funeral costs and other accident-related losses in Florida.
